Anthony’s Story

We have a disabled veteran, Anthony Mitchell,  who has been living in his truck for years.  He has a house that was damaged by Hurricane Katrina and made worse by every storm after.  The house is determined to be uninhabitable by the city.  As an uninhabitable house, Anthony was getting ticketed by the city every month and because he owned this uninhabitable house, he didn’t qualify for any housing assistance programs.  So, with nothing else he could do, Anthony mustered up his courage and did one of the hardest things he could do.  Asked for help.

Because of his unique situation, no one knew how to solve this problem.  But, our community of non-profit organizations pulled together and are solving this problem together.

  1. The NOLA VFW worked with Anthony and the city to stop them from sending more fines and clearing all the standing fines due to the unique situation.
  2. Rebuilding Together New OrleansHabitat for Humanity New Orleans, and The Home Depot are demolishing the uninhabitable house.
  3. Once the house is gone, Anthony will get housing assistance from Bastion, an organization that Anthony already enjoys and is a frequent participant in their bible study.
  4. Then RTNO, Habitat, and The Home Depot will build Anthony a new home built to the Fortified Gold Standard, so Anthony will not have to go through this ever again.

I have been spearheading this operation and have made a true friend in the process. Anthony’s life is forever affected by the great work of our community and it couldn’t be happening to a better person.
